The WIAT-4 is a test of intellectual ability for children aged from 4 years to around 50 years.
The test is designed to assess academic achievement encompassing a broad range of academic skills including reading, writing, mathematics and oral language. This assessment may be used to assess specific learning disorders and gifted children.
The process of a cognitive assessment is as follows:
- Initial consultation – a 1 hour comprehensive background information is gathered including developmental history, medical issues, academic issues (where applicable), social/family relationships and any other issues or concerns. This is to gain a holistic view of the child to inform interpretation and recommendations as appropriate.
- Testing – This will depend on the ability and willingness of the client. Please note the location for the assessment will be conducted in a face-to-face capacity, as such the administration of cognitive assessments is only applicable to NSW.
- Scoring and interpretation – The assessment(s) will be scored and interpreted against standardised norms.
- Report writing – The background information, behavioural observations during testing, test results and consequent interpretations will be combined into a comprehensive report that includes relevant recommendations as appropriate, to the home and educational setting.
- Feedback session – A feedback session where the outcomes of the testing, the report and relevant recommendations for school or home are explained in detail.
NB: For best results, it is recommended that the evaluation is completed alongside a intelligence test.
